  • Member, Human Remains Working Group, UK Department of Media, Culture and Sport, 2001-2004. (National parliamentary working group resulting in changes to the British Museum Act to permit UK national museums to repatriate human remains, and  a national guidance document.)

  • Member, Human Remains Advisory Group, UK Department of Media, Culture and Sport, 2006-8.

 

Curatorial advice and training to UK museums sector, including: 

  • 2017, consultation with Ashmolean Museum on North American items from Tradescant collection 

  • 2015-17, National Maritime Museum, advice re Indigenous component of Tudor World gallery

  • Royal Academy, November 2013, advisory committee for future exhibition 

  • Curatorial conferences for Haida Project and Blackfoot Shirts Project: both brought substantial First Nations delegations together with curators and conservators from c.20 UK museums holding collections from those nations (2009, 2011)

 

Public History Consulting: I have written a key text about the interpretation of Indigenous histories at living history sites, Playing Ourselves (AltaMira, 2007) and have consulted for Parks Canada, Colonial Williamsburg Foundation’s American Indian Initiative (gave inaugural keynote lecture for program, 2004), the Minnesota Historical Society and other institutions.
